MapAnything gets $42.5 million to expand "Location-of-Things" services

Charlotte based MapAnything, a provider of location services for the likes of Pendo, Maritim Hotels, Lunchr, Dyax and Valvoline just closed on $42.5 million Series C funding from new investors GM Ventures, GlobalTranz CEO Andrew Leto and existing investors Salesforce Ventures, Greycroft, Harbert Growth Partners, and David Stern.

As part of this investment, Andrew Leto will be joining the company's board. MapAnything is aiming to expand ledership in what is dubbed as the "Location-of-Things" market. It provides location services for various industries ranging from Fleet Management Software Solutions to Data for prospecting & lead Generation to guides for Multi-day Routing Optimization and several others.


It currently offers these solutions to to some of the world's largest financial, manufacturing and CPG companies in the Fortune 500 and Forbes Global 2,000. It'll make use of this funding to to expand its reach in key markets, broaden its developer community …

Forbes just recently came out with this year's edition of its renowned list of  'Next Billion-Dollar Startups', One which in previous times have predicted the rise of notable names such as $4 billion DoorDash, PillPack (purchased by Amazon for a reported $1 billion), Thumbtack, Opendoor and construction software unicorn Procore.

For this year, Forbes in collaboration with TrueBridge Capital Partners asked nearly 200 VC firms to nominate the companies they thought are most likely to become unicorns. From the over 100 submitted, Forbes narrowed it down to the 25 listed below:

Amplitude : SF based analytics startup with $57 million raised and over 12,000 customers including Microsoft, Square, Atlassian, Under Armour, Dropbox, InVision, Autodesk, DoorDash, Paypal, Hubspot, Instacart and several others.

Anduril Industries : Defense startup which counts Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey as part of its founding team.

Auth0 : Bellevue based startup with $110 million in funding so far which provides a universal identity platform for web, mobile, IoT, and internal applications.

Away : New York based luggage designer, manufacturer and retailer with estimated $150 million projected revenues for this year.

Braze : NY based mobile marketing startup which raised $80 million at $850 million early this month.

Cloud9 : Top esports team with over $70 million raised as well as sponsor partnerships with HP, Twitch, MSI, Red Bull and also the U.S. Air Force.

Couchbase : Mountain View based startup with $155 million raised so far and notable for its “NoSQL” databases which enable developers add users quickly and create more responsive UI interfaces (sometimes at the cost of flexibility and sophistication).

Coursera : Widely used online learning platform founded by Stanford professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Kolle valued at $800 million from a last year round.

Flywire : Fintech startup and provider of foreign currency payment solutions for universities, hospitals and businesses. Raised $100 million in July.

Honey : Coupon codes browser extension with projected $100 million revenue for this year.

KeepTruckin : Electronic logs and fleet management software provider for trucking services. $80 million in equity raised so far.

Lemonade : Insurance tech startup which raised $120 million from Softbank December last year.

Mapbox : Provider of custom online maps with $228 million raised so far and customers such as Scoot, Instacart, Tableau Software, Palantir, General Electric, National Geographic, and Uber.

Markforged : 3D printer provider with projected $70 million in 2018 revenues.

Pendo : Web and mobile based analytics software maker with customers such as Zendesk, Infor, Namely, Cisco, Optimizely and Citrix.

Podium : Customer communication software maker with customers across a wide range of industries.

Poshmark : Digital marketplace centered on clothing and accessories with over 40 million users and an estimated projection of $130 million in revenue for this year.

Skillz : Online mobile multiplayer competition platform estimated to bring in $358 million in revenue for this year.

Sonder : Airbnb like hospitality startup with $135 million raised so far and a $100 million run rate. $85 million raised in August.

ThirdLove : Online only underwear brand with projected $160 million in 2018 revenues. Valued at $750 million.

Transfix : Digital freight broker with customers such as Target, Unilever, J.Crew, Staples and Anheuser-Busch.

TripleLift : Adtech company with estimated $150 million for this year revenue and advertisers spanning various top consumer brands.

uBiome : San Francisco based biotech company that sells at home kits fitted with key technology developed to to sequence the human microbiomes. $105 million raised so far and projected $100 million revenue for this year.

VSCO : Social photography mobile app with over a million paid subscribers and 73% of users under 25.

Welltok : Denver based enterprise Software as a Service company for consumer health. $280 million raised so far and projected $80 million+ for 2018 revenue.

Palantir said to be in skirmish with Morgan Stanley over valuation

Palantir has been reported to be involved in quite a collision with Morgan Stanley's mutual funds regarding the valuation of the data mining firm set for a said IPO in soon time. As per a report from Bloomberg, The bank's funds who hold a minority stake and estimated the company's value at just $4.4 billion, a far cry from its most recent $20 billion private valuation caused a stir with CEO Alex Karp and colleagues who tried to strike a deal to buy back all stock held by the mutual funds.

Morgan Stanley is said to have sold stock back to Palantir when similar frustrations where expressed last year but is not giving heed this time. Quite ironic is that Morgan Stanley's investment bank unit separate from its mutual funds but operating under the same umbrella reportedly valued the Palo Alto based company at $41 billion for a future public offering.

Ex Oracle executive Thomas Kurian to replace Diane Greene as head of Google Cloud

Google Cloud head Diane Greene has announced she would be stepping down for that role with a notable replacement by name of Thomas Kurian, the former President of Product Development at Oracle who resigned from that position this year after being with the company for 22 years.

Kurian, a respected technologist and executive will officially join Google Cloud on the 26th of this month and will transition to the leadership role early next year. Greene will continue to lead till January and will remain a Director on the Alphabet board after Kurian takes over.

Dell said to involve more banks to raise cash for VMware tracking stock deal

Dell Technologies has been reported to working with investment banks to raise additional cash for a $21.7 billion offer to purchase tracking stock tied to its VMware unit in a move which could see the company return to the public markets.

This report comes from Reuters and cites people familiar with the matter. It comes after several investors in the tracking stock including Icahn Enterprises chair and billionaire businessman Carl Icahn. Several investors argue that the deal transfers too much value to Dell's owners, CEO Michael Dell and private equity backer Silver Lake.


Dell requires a majority of VMware stockholders to approve the deal which would see itself become a publicly listed company without a public offering. The tracking stock was issued in 2016 for the purchase of data storage company EMC for a hefty $67 billion price so it wouldn't pay all cash to prevent addition to its debt.

Airtable raises $100 million from Benchmark, Thrive and Coatue at $1.1 billion valuation

Following a report from last month of Silicon Valley startup Airtable raising $100 million in new funding, This has now been confirmed with the startup having raised exactly just that from Benchmark, Thrive Capital and Coatue Management at a $1.1 billion valuation marking another entry into the unicorn club.

Airtable led by co-founder Howie Liu who currently services as CEO has now raised $162 million in total and counts 80,000 enterprise customers from the likes of Shopify, Box, Target, Medium, Netflix, Pinterest and Slack to small business firms.

Daimler to develop new €145 million R&D base in China

Auto manufacturer Daimler recently unveiled plans for a new Research and Development Tech Center in China with a total investment of over 1.1 billion RMB (approximately €145 million) to mark further expansion of its footprint in what counts as its second largest market.

This new site will be located on on the premises of the Beijing Benz Automotive production hub and will cater for the localization of new Mercedes-Benz products for the Chinese market. It'll mark as the second major Daimler R&D site in the region also.

SpaceX wins approval to deploy over 7,000 satellites

SpaceX has won approval from U.S. regulators deploy 7,518 satellites, More than the number of satellites currently in operation as part of a constellation designed to provide broadband communications. The company says it plans to kick off launches next year.
