Airbnb Profitable For Two Years Straight As It Heads For Public Markets

Airbnb today announced a number of milestones which include being profitable for a second year on an EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) basis in 2018. This counts as a plus as the company heads for an IPO reported to be taking place this year.

It also says it's on track to hit 500 million guest arrivals on its platform by the end of Q1 this year. While specific figures are not provided, the company exceeded its 2017 projections with $93 million in profit on $2.6 billion in revenue, Bloomberg says with CEO Brian Chesky promising a public offering before 2020 when some employee stock grants expire.

This month, longtime Amazon executive Dave Stephenson joined the company as chief financial officer, a key role in preparation for an IPO after its previous CFO Laurence Tosi left last year amid a disagreement with Chesky.

These 25 startups made Forbes 2018 'Next Billion-Dollar Startups' list

Forbes just recently came out with this year's edition of its renowned list of  'Next Billion-Dollar Startups', One which in previous times have predicted the rise of notable names such as $4 billion DoorDash, PillPack (purchased by Amazon for a reported $1 billion), Thumbtack, Opendoor and construction software unicorn Procore.

For this year, Forbes in collaboration with TrueBridge Capital Partners asked nearly 200 VC firms to nominate the companies they thought are most likely to become unicorns. From the over 100 submitted, Forbes narrowed it down to the 25 listed below:

Amplitude : SF based analytics startup with $57 million raised and over 12,000 customers including Microsoft, Square, Atlassian, Under Armour, Dropbox, InVision, Autodesk, DoorDash, Paypal, Hubspot, Instacart and several others.

Anduril Industries : Defense startup which counts Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey as part of its founding team.

Auth0 : Bellevue based startup with $110 million in funding so far which provides a universal identity platform for web, mobile, IoT, and internal applications.

Away : New York based luggage designer, manufacturer and retailer with estimated $150 million projected revenues for this year.

Braze : NY based mobile marketing startup which raised $80 million at $850 million early this month.

Cloud9 : Top esports team with over $70 million raised as well as sponsor partnerships with HP, Twitch, MSI, Red Bull and also the U.S. Air Force.

Couchbase : Mountain View based startup with $155 million raised so far and notable for its “NoSQL” databases which enable developers add users quickly and create more responsive UI interfaces (sometimes at the cost of flexibility and sophistication).

Coursera : Widely used online learning platform founded by Stanford professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Kolle valued at $800 million from a last year round.

Flywire : Fintech startup and provider of foreign currency payment solutions for universities, hospitals and businesses. Raised $100 million in July.

Honey : Coupon codes browser extension with projected $100 million revenue for this year.

KeepTruckin : Electronic logs and fleet management software provider for trucking services. $80 million in equity raised so far.

Lemonade : Insurance tech startup which raised $120 million from Softbank December last year.

Mapbox : Provider of custom online maps with $228 million raised so far and customers such as Scoot, Instacart, Tableau Software, Palantir, General Electric, National Geographic, and Uber.

Markforged : 3D printer provider with projected $70 million in 2018 revenues.

Pendo : Web and mobile based analytics software maker with customers such as Zendesk, Infor, Namely, Cisco, Optimizely and Citrix.

Podium : Customer communication software maker with customers across a wide range of industries.

Poshmark : Digital marketplace centered on clothing and accessories with over 40 million users and an estimated projection of $130 million in revenue for this year.

Skillz : Online mobile multiplayer competition platform estimated to bring in $358 million in revenue for this year.

Sonder : Airbnb like hospitality startup with $135 million raised so far and a $100 million run rate. $85 million raised in August.

ThirdLove : Online only underwear brand with projected $160 million in 2018 revenues. Valued at $750 million.

Transfix : Digital freight broker with customers such as Target, Unilever, J.Crew, Staples and Anheuser-Busch.

TripleLift : Adtech company with estimated $150 million for this year revenue and advertisers spanning various top consumer brands.

uBiome : San Francisco based biotech company that sells at home kits fitted with key technology developed to to sequence the human microbiomes. $105 million raised so far and projected $100 million revenue for this year.

VSCO : Social photography mobile app with over a million paid subscribers and 73% of users under 25.

Welltok : Denver based enterprise Software as a Service company for consumer health. $280 million raised so far and projected $80 million+ for 2018 revenue.

Misty II Personal Robot Scheduled To Ship In April For $2,399

Misty II, a personal robot which non-technical owners can program using the Misty Blockly client, a visual block-based programming interface for creation of new skills for the robot to make it talk, roar, move, dance and more will be available for purchase April this year for $2,399, a four months delay from its initial proposed December 4 released date.

From April, customers can get their hands on the robot which would come installed with pre-set skills to get them started on use. Ford Slashes Thousands Of Jobs In Europe To Improve Profitability

Automaker Ford has announced it's slashing thousands of jobs in its European operations as part of structural cost improvements to improve near-term financial performance. The company made this known in a statement issued to investors.

“Ford aims to achieve the labor cost reductions, as far as possible, through voluntary employee separations in Europe and will be working closely with social partners and other stakeholders to achieve this objective.” The company said in its statement.





These job cuts will affect both salaried and hourly workers across its operations in Europe. Ford is ending production at its plant in Bordeaux, France that manufactures small automatic transmissions by this year August and has began discussions to end production of the C-MAX and Grand C-MAX vehicles at its German facility.

Amazon Set To Take Stake In Warehouse Robotics Firm Balyo

Amazon has agreed to a deal with publicly traded French warehouse robotics firm Balyo that could see the e-commerce giant build up a nearly one-third stake in the company and also boost sales of its self-driving forklift trucks. Under deal terms, Amazon will receive free stock warrants of up to 29% of Balyo's capital that it can exercise depending on its orders of products enabled by the company's software.

The full 29% would be exercised if Amazon purchases up to 300 million euros ($346 million) worth of these products. Use of warehouse robots is a key factor in efforts by Amazon to decrease costs and speed up deliveries. It began using robots developed by Kiva Systems (a company it acquired in 2012 for $775 million) in 2014, Kiva which initially shipped to other warehouse operators put an end to this after the acquisition, dedicating its technology to Amazon alone.

Nissan Unveils New EV, The Leaf Plus

Nissan has unveiled a new electric vehicle, an addition to its Leaf lineup dubbed the Leaf Plus (or e+) which will become available for purchase at dealerships late this month. The Leaf Plus comes with improved range by 40% than its predecessor and is equipped with technologies including Nissan's ProPilot semi-autonomous driving system and e-Pedal mode for one-pedal driving.

FedEx Agrees To $35 Million Settlement With N.Y. Over Cigarette Deliveries

FedEx has agreed to pay a $35 million settlement to the state of New York over illegal cigarette deliveries to its residents over a ten-year period, resolving three lawsuits alleging it partnered with cigarette trafficking businesses to illegally ship hundreds of thousands of untaxed cigarettes to New York residents.

The company will also implement internal reforms and hire an independent consultant that will oversee its compliance with the law and provide reports to the city and state. October last year, NY federal district judge Edgardo Ramos ruled that FedEx's conduct over many years for customers with such names as “Cigarettes Direct To You” violated a federal anti-cigarette trafficking statute, prompting FedEx to cease residential cigarette deliveries.

Apple Reportedly Cuts Production Plans For New iPhones By 10%

According to a report from the Nikkei Asian Review, Apple is cutting current production plans for new iPhones by 10% signalling expectation of a further hit in iPhone sales for the year after it recently lowered revenue guidance for its fiscal 2019 first quarter ending 29th of December 2018 due to lower iPhone sales.

Nikkei says Apple asked suppliers late last month to produce fewer of new iPhones for the January-March quarter of this year. This will be the second time in two months that the company has slashed production rate of the iPhone if this stands true.


Overall planned production volume will be reduced to 40 million to 43 million units for the January-March quarter from an earlier number of 43 million - 47 million units scheduled for production, Nikkei says.

N26 Raises $300 Million Series D At $2.7 Billion Valuation

Berlin based fintech N26 has raised $300 million Series D funding led by New York based VC Insight Venture Partners with participation from Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, GIC and several existing investors. This rounds brings the total raised by the 5 year old company to more than $500 million and values it at $2.7 billion.

The $300 million round represents the largest private equity round for an European fintech company in recent years, shooting N26 operating in 24 markets across Europe with over 2.3 million customers into the unicorn club.



The company which says it has tripled its customer base in the last 12 months will make use of this investment to drive global expansion, starting with a launch of its mobile banking product in the U.S. in the first half of this year. Amazon Starts Shipping Echo Auto After More Than 1 Million Pre-orders

Amazon has began shipping the Echo Auto, part of the host of Alexa enabled devices announced last year September by the company which included a microwave, clock, security camera, smart plug, the Echo Sub, Echo Input and re-designed versions of already existing devices.

The company tells TechCrunch over 1 million pre-orders were placed by consumers signalling high interest in the device which connects Alexa to users' smartphone and then plays through car speakers, enabling tasks like playing music, opening the garage door, finding the nearest gas station and checking the news while on the go possible.
