TuSimple Inks Delivery Contract With USPS

TuSimple -- the driverless truck startup that raised $95 million earlier this year at a $1 billion valuation -- has been awarded a contract from the United States Postal Service (USPS) to transport packages over 1,000 miles between the Postal Service's Phoenix, Arizona and Dallas, Texas distribution centers. TuSimple will deliver these packages with self-driving trucks that'll have a safety engineer and driver on board for the duration of the journey.

TuSimple will run some of its driverless trucks for 22 hours each -- including overnight driving -- along the I-10, I-20 and I-30 corridors on a trip through Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Freight flowing through the I-10 (Interstate 10) corridor notably accounts for 60% of total economic activity in the U.S.

Xnor Debuts A Miniaturised AI Platform

Seattle based startup Xnor has unveiled a standalone battery-free, solar-powered AI platform that it says will enable AI to run on in an "always-on mode" on a range of edge devices, like the tiny camera in the above picture. Xnor says the AI solution is able to detect visual objects, including people, making use of deep learning models previously dependent on powerful GPUs but now able to run on a simple solar cell.

The company says the miniaturised platform will enable AI technologies - embedded into solutions ranging from consumer wearables to self-driving vehicles - to scale faster and "more efficiently, and with far less environmental impact". Its making use of the prototype camera displayed in the above and below photo to demonstrate its capability.

The camera is capable of analyzing video content via deep learning algorithms, Xnor says. It's able to identify, classify and code objetcs within a frame and then send this information to a recipient in near real-time via wireless communication protocols designed for IoT (internet of things) applications. Photo and video data never leaves the device, Xnor says, enabling security to help guarantee a user's privacy is protected.

Being small and lightweight, the AI platform would make for easy use in a range of devices, taking up lesser space that can be utilised for other functions. “With technology this low power, a device running on only a coin cell battery could be always on, detecting things every second, running for 32 years!” Xnor Head of Hardware Engineering, Sam Naderiparizi, said in a press statement.

According to a study by the U.S. Natural Resources Defense Council, data centers in the U.S. process an ever increasing number of traditional AI algorithms that are estimated to consume close to 140 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year by 2020, the equivalent of 50 large coal-fired power plants.

Xnor is hoping to not only have a hand in saving businesses from the estimated $13 billion annual energy cost, but to also curb the release of nearly 100 million metric tons of carbon pollution each year. A demo video of the new AI solution debuted by Xnor is displayed below :



Founded in 2017, Xnor is a relatively young startup whose platform is built on research conducted at the University of Washington and the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, a research hub founded by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The company is led by Jon Gelsey, the former CEO of web security company Auth0.

It's backed by nearly $15 million in funding according to Crunchbase data, from investors including Madrona Venture Group, Autotech Ventures and NGP Capital.

Angela Ahrendts Joins Airbnb's Board

Airbnb has added former Apple retail chief and ex Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts to its board. She'll serve as the company's third independent non-affiliated board member, the other two being former American Express CEO Ken Chenault and former Pixar Studios CFO Ann Mather (who also serves on the boards of Netflix, Alphabet, Arista Networks, Glu Mobile and Shutterfly).

Ahrendts led global retail at Apple for five years before stepping down this year to be replaced by three decade running Apple Veteran Deirdre O’Brien. Prior to Apple, she spent eight years as CEO of British luxury brand Burberry. She also spent 25 years in New York as an executive at fashion brand Liz Claiborne and as President of Donna Karan International prior to Burberry.


Other notable Airbnb board members include LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, Sequoia's Alfred Lin, Andreessen Horowitz's Jeff Jordan, and co-founders Joe Gebbia, Brian Chesky, and Nathan Blecharczyk.

Medium Said To Have Between 200k-400k Paying Subscribers

Medium -- the online publishing startup led by Twitter co-founder and former CEO Evan Williams -- has seen its number of paying subscribers grow to between 200,000 and 400,000 according to a Cheddar piece. This implies at least $10 million in annual revenue from subscriptions alone in consideration to Medium's $50 annual fee for access to unlimited articles from publishing partners and solo writers.

Medium was founded in 2012 and has raised $132 million in total funding according to Crunchbase data, at a most recent $600 million valuation. Amid keen competition in the online publishing world, growing to an above 200,000 paying subscribers count in 7 years is quite impressive.

BMW Launches Electric Scooters

It seems the electric scooter game has been on a tear as of late. Boosted -- known for its electric skateboards -- recently debuted a $1,600 electric scooter. Now, automaker BMW has followed suit, debuting three electric scooters in collaboration with Micro Mobility (maker of the Micro Scooter). The three electric scooters comprises of a main e-scooter, a scooter built for city riding, and another built for kids.

The main scooter, the BMW E-Scooter, has a range of 7.5 miles (12 km) and up to 12 mph (20km/h) top speed. Other of its features include a 150-watt motor and lithium-ion battery, two separate braking systems, two hours full charge, and the ability to be folded up easily. It's lightweight, weighing just 9 kg.

Meet Ford's Delivery Robot

Ford recently teamed up with Agility Robotics -- a Playground Global backed robotics company spun out of Oregon State University -- on a new bipedal autonomous delivery robot named Digit, that'll carry out the final step of getting delivered packages from the vehicle to the customer's door. The new robot is a stand-out concept of many designs and visions laid out by various companies for robo-deliveries.

Digit, the two-legged robot is made of lightweight material and is capable of lifting packages weighing up to 40 pounds (18.1kg). It can go up and down stairs, work through uneven terrain and even react to physical actions like being bumped into without losing its balance and tripping over.

GitHub Acquires Dependabot

GitHub has announced it has acquired Dependabot, a tool that aids developers steer clear of introducing security issues via bugs in open-source libraries. GitHub is directly integrating the service, which will now be free, even with refunds for users that paid for future months. Now, users will also be able to configure Dependabot within GitHub without the use of the Dependabot dashboard.

The existing Dependabot app has been ramed to Dependabot Preview and will remain available in the GitHub Marketplace. GitHub has doubled the number of people working on Dependabot and is promising "lots of great improvements over the coming months."



Udacity And Mercedes-Benz Launch New Nanodegree

Udacity is building further on its partnership with Mercedes-Benz, this time launching a "Sensor Fusion Engineer" Nanodegree program. Udacity is working with Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America (MBRDNA), notably one of the first automotive manufacturers to get hold of a license to test driverless cars on public roads in California.
Udacity first partnered with Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America in 2016 to launch its "Self-Driving Car Engineer" Nanodegree program, one that has seen more than 21,000 enrollments from 120 countries. Udacity says "many of its graduates" have landed new jobs at the likes of BMW, Bosch, Lyft, Nvidia, Audi, and Jaguar Land Rover.

Clinc Clings $52 Million Series B

Clinc -- an Ann Arbor, Michigan based AI startup -- has secured $52 million Series B funding led by Insight Partners, with participation from DFJ Growth and existing investors Hyde Park Venture Partners and Drive Capital. Clinc has now raised nearly $60 million in total funding according to Crunchbase data.

The company says it achieved a 300% annual revenue growth and expects to more than triple that this year alone. It's planning to reach 140 employees by year end and intends to occupy a new 26,000 square foot office in Ann Arbor, Michigan.


“We’ve had phenomenal growth and built unbelievable momentum in a very short period of time,” Clinc CEO Jason Mars said in a statement. “Now we’re adding more world class investors to support our growing team as we work to accelerate the pace of innovation and to reshape the conversational AI landscape, one industry at a time.”

Clinc expects this round to be its last before it heads for an IPO.
